Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ahhh Valentine’s Day. Love is certainly in the air here in Santa Fe, and I think I saw cupid flying by with his bow and arrow this morning.

I still remember Valentine’s Day as a child. I think we can all remember the excitement we felt sharing special valentines with our classmates… and getting a little nervous when it was time to put one on our crush’s desk. I love that this is a tradition that our schools still keep, and one of the highlights of my year is getting creative and making some DIY Valentine’s Day cards with Isla.

Let your kids take the lead with this DIY craft

I see Valentine’s Day, like any holiday, as a chance for Isla to continue discovering how fun it can be to create a DIY project that really lets her personality shine through. I think it’s so important to craft with our kids, especially if you have creative-minded children like I do!

I encourage you to take this holiday to spend some loving time with your kids, and show them how to view their creativity as an asset by encouraging them to take the lead in DIY projects like this one. Let your kids choose interesting materials, details, and designs that stand out to them… even if they might not meet your adult definition of perfect!

To get you started, I wanted to show you what we used to make our DIY Valentine’s Day cards, so you can follow along and create your own. Don’t be afraid to add your own unique, personal touch!

Simple supplies & an easy design

For this project, we got everything at Target (no need to make last-minute shopping extra-stressful!). Isla picked out everything herself, and I think she did a great job.

These sweet little DIY Valentine’s Day cards are so simple to make, and Isla really enjoyed choosing which fun stickers to use. To make things extra easy, we stuck to one main design (great if you have multiple kiddos working together and want to use an assembly line-like process).

She decided on a sparkly bow and arrow design, with some pretty paper fringing on the end. We then used a wax seal stamp on each envelope, using lots of different colors to make each one feel special. Isla did this part all by herself.

On each card, we wrote “From, Isla.”

Finishing touches for your DIY Valentine’s Day Cards

Inside the envelope, we put an adorable pink heart-shaped eraser. There are no sweets allowed at her school, so this makes a practical but festive substitute that the kids can enjoy using. If your school has the same policy, consider using pencils, stickers, or some other classroom-friendly treat.

We used some funky patterned washi tape to attach a pencil to each envelope, continuing with the theme of festive school supplies. As you can see in the picture, we were able to find some pretty unique tape, with everything from pizza and watermelons to leopard-print-esque hearts printed on them.

Easy kids Valentines DIY

All done! These DIY Valentine’s Day cards are so pretty, simple, and fun to make with kids. You can adapt this idea to use for any other holiday too, or switch the pencil/eraser for candy if your school will allow. If you give it a try, let me know how it went in the comments below!
