Need Some Design Inspiration?

Today we will focus on tips for beautiful kids spaces, and inspiration for designing your kid’s room! Planning a kid’s room or play space is a great way to bond with your child and showcase what makes them spark.

How do you find inspiration for designing your kid’s room?

I like to spend a lot of time talking to the kiddo to see what they’re interested in and passionate about. This is an opportunity for kids to feel part of the collaborative process! In the past we’ve used a child’s artwork to inspire the space, whether displayed in frame or printed onto a decorative pillow.

When working with families, I like to get some insights from the parents. How does your little one like to use the space? What problems need solving within the space? What would make you feel like this is the perfect space?

What is a key element for designing a space kids will love to live in?

Kids’ spaces need to be active and engaging. They need to be fun and spark imagination and creativity! Sometimes this means taking more risks and using a few bold pieces. One of my favorite spaces incorporates a playful yet functional slide, which connects to a closet and reading nook. Yes, you can bring a little bit of the playground to the room! It is possible to make rooms dynamic enough to be a calm place of rest and a place to move around and have fun.

What is a must-have in a kid’s room?

Bright colors and personality! It has to speak to their personality. And that doesn’t have to mean superheroes and princesses! I don’t do things they will grow out of too quickly. I like to take into consideration both what the child will enjoy now and also what they can grow into, elements that will be stylish for years to come.

But let’s say they love butterflies, rainbows, and clouds. I’ll make sure the bed feels soft like a cloud and cheerful like a rainbow.

We’ve always done some sort of scaled down kids’ nook. I’ve done beds out of play houses, slides out of closets, and LEGO climbing walls. You want to let kids be kids, ya’ know!

Now that you’re inspired. Here are a few other tips to keep in mind.

  • Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns — that helps keep it interesting, colorful, and fun.
  • Be sure to incorporate storage solutions. Kids have lots of toys and knick knacks, and the storage can be both functional and part of a smart design.
  • Don’t worry about matching the rest of the house. This is your chance to design from the heart and enjoy letting your child’s personality shine, while making sure the space works for your family’s needs.

Throughout this process, you’ll get to make new memories with your child as you think about what makes your child tick and what pieces will represent them. It’s a great way to tell their story and liven up your home.
