There are numerous reasons why people “don’t” do things… expectations, criticism, possibility of failure… the list could go on and on. Depending on the type of perspective you have, this question could be answered with positivity or negativity. When I have the pleasure of surrounding myself with people who answer this question positively and take life’s hiccups and turn them into opportunities, I watch with pleasure, intent and inspiration. Nigel and Sabine Conway are those people. They are one of the most creative and inspired young couples I know. They have vision, will, strength, and determination. The type of couple that one day you’ll say with a smile “I knew them when”.
Our families have been friends for years now, living in an incredible artist community and raising our children together. Recently, Sabine, lost her job. She was the gallery director for a prestigious gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe where she curated numerous art openings and helped grow the careers of many artists. My initial reaction to the news was similar to when I lost my job, f*’em, their major loss, why don’t you… do your own thing! Well, of course, true to form, Nigel and Sabine we’re well on their way. In support of his wife and realizing the downward spiral this gallery was now on without Sabine, Nigel pulled his art out of that gallery and together they formed Art Shack. A gallery in Madrid, NM solely supporting emerging artists, which happen to be most of their friends. As Sabine said, “not only are we surrounded by super talents, but its already a great trusting relationship and I get to represent their work.” Most of their artists are not represented elsewhere and all of them are local. So, when you go into Art Shack, you gain access to a side of Madrid that few are fortunate enough to be exposed to… the behind the scene talent of only emerging local artists, curated by the impeccable eye of Sabine. The vast talent that you will see in this soon to open gallery is unique and wildly inspiring. You can take a sneak peek at the 17 lucky artists being represented by Art Shack on their website, right here. It’s a blessing to watch your friends grow and create their dream. In my opinion, dreaming is the only reality there is, and creating it for yourself is what true art is really about. I can’t wait to watch this journey!
